A Guide to Canmore's Natural Escapes 🌿
Nestled in the Bow Valley between towering limestone peaks at the eastern gateway to Banff National Park, Canmore is one of Canada's most spectacular mountain towns. Surrounded by world-class hiking, turquoise alpine lakes, ancient rock art, and the legendary Three Sisters peaks soaring overhead, Canmore offers some of the finest mountain nature experiences on the continent.
💎 Grassi Lakes – Turquoise Lakes & Ancient Rock Art
Canmore's signature hike, the Grassi Lakes trail (4.3 km return) climbs through dense spruce forest to two impossibly turquoise alpine lakes set in a dramatic limestone amphitheatre. The harder route follows a series of beautiful cascading waterfalls up the cliff face, while ancient Blackfoot rock paintings grace the canyon walls near the lakes. The panoramic views of the Bow Valley and surrounding peaks from the lake basins are among the finest in the entire Rockies.

🌊 Canmore Nordic Centre – Trail Network & Valley Views
Built for the 1988 Winter Olympics, the Canmore Nordic Centre sits on the slopes above town and offers an outstanding network of multi-use trails through spruce and aspen forest with sweeping views of the Three Sisters, Ha Ling Peak, and the entire Bow Valley. In summer, 65 km of trails are open for hiking and mountain biking; in winter, the groomed cross-country ski trail system is world-class. Elk are frequently spotted grazing the open slopes near the trails.

🏔️ Ha Ling Peak – Iconic Canmore Summit Hike
The most iconic hike from Canmore, Ha Ling Peak (8.7 km return, 740 m elevation gain) follows a steady trail through subalpine forest before emerging onto an open rocky ridge with one of the most breathtaking views in Alberta. Standing atop Ha Ling's summit, the entire Bow Valley unfolds below — with Canmore and the surrounding peaks stretching in every direction. The massive limestone face of Mount Lawrence Grassi and the Three Sisters tower directly opposite.

🌿 Bow River Trail – Canmore's Riverside Nature Walk
Running along both banks of the Bow River through Canmore, the Bow River Trail offers a spectacular flat nature walk with extraordinary mountain scenery at every turn. The trail connects Canmore's parks, wildlife corridors, and natural areas in a seamless riverside route where elk, mule deer, and even the occasional black bear or wolf are spotted walking through town. Beaver ponds along the river edges attract waterfowl, and the mountain reflections on the Bow's still waters are endlessly photogenic.

🦅 Three Sisters & Lady Macdonald – Canmore's Defining Peaks
The Three Sisters — three dramatic limestone peaks rising directly above Canmore — define the town's skyline and offer some of its finest hiking challenges. The Teepee Town Trail and policeman's Creek Walk offer accessible views at their base, while the more demanding Lady Macdonald Trail (8 km return, 880 m gain) climbs to a breathtaking ridge above the townsite with views that rank among the very best in the Canadian Rockies.
