A Guide to Cochrane's Natural Escapes 🌿

Perched above the Bow River Valley just 30 minutes west of Calgary with the Rocky Mountains filling the entire western horizon, Cochrane enjoys one of the most spectacular natural settings of any Alberta town. With dramatic river valley trails, fescue grassland parks, and Banff National Park less than an hour away, residents of Cochrane are surrounded by some of Canada's most extraordinary scenery.

🌊 Bow River Pathway – Cochrane's Riverside Trail

Cochrane's crown jewel for outdoor lovers, the Bow River Pathway follows the wide, swift-moving Bow River through a stunning valley flanked by forested hillsides and open fescue grassland. The trail connects multiple parks and greenspaces through town, with excellent wildlife viewing — beavers, mule deer, great blue herons, bald eagles, and the occasional elk or coyote are all regular visitors. Mountain views upstream are spectacular on clear days, with the Rockies looming directly to the west.

🌾 Glenbow Ranch Provincial Park – Prairie, Coulees & River Views

Bordering Cochrane's eastern edge, Glenbow Ranch Provincial Park is one of Alberta's finest grassland parks — 1,800 hectares of pristine fescue prairie, cottonwood coulees, and dramatic Bow River valley terrain. Over 30 km of trails range from easy riverside walks to challenging coulee climbs with panoramic views of the Bow River and front range peaks. Mule deer, coyotes, golden eagles, and prairie falcons are regularly spotted on the open grassland ridges.

🦅 Yamnuska – Gateway to the Rockies Hike

Just 25 minutes west of Cochrane near Exshaw, Mount Yamnuska's golden limestone face marks the dramatic threshold between the foothills and the Rocky Mountains. The 11 km trail climbs through mixed forest and open meadows with increasingly dramatic views, arriving at the base of the massive south cliff face and rewarding hikers with sweeping panoramas of the foothills and prairies. Bighorn sheep are often spotted scrambling the rocky slopes above.

💎 Grassi Lakes – Turquoise Alpine Lakes Near Canmore

About 45 minutes west of Cochrane near Canmore, Grassi Lakes is one of the most rewarding short hikes in Alberta. The 4.3 km trail climbs through spruce forest to two stunning turquoise lakes framed by towering limestone cliffs. Ancient Blackfoot pictographs are carved into the canyon walls beside the lakes, adding a remarkable cultural dimension. The views from the top over the Bow Valley and surrounding peaks are absolutely spectacular.

🏔️ Johnston Canyon – Banff National Park Waterfalls

About 50 minutes west of Cochrane in Banff National Park, Johnston Canyon is one of the most spectacular and accessible canyon hikes in Canada. A suspended catwalk clings to the limestone walls above the roaring creek, leading to the thundering Lower Falls (2.7 km return) and then the Upper Falls (5.9 km return) through increasingly dramatic canyon scenery. The trail is accessible year-round, and winter visits when the falls partially freeze into dramatic ice formations are particularly magical.
