Just minutes from Winkler in neighbouring Morden, the Canadian Fossil Discovery Centre sits atop one of the world's richest marine fossil beds. The rolling prairie around Morden hides extraordinary fossils of mosasaurs, plesiosaurs, and fish from the ancient Western Interior Seaway. Guided fossil walks through the surrounding hills give visitors a chance to search for prehistoric treasures in one of Canada's most remarkable palaeontological landscapes.

🌊 Whitewater Lake Wildlife Management Area – Birding Paradise

Located west of Winkler near Boissevain, Whitewater Lake is one of Manitoba's top birding destinations with over 200 recorded species. Shallow alkaline waters attract enormous flocks of migratory shorebirds, waterfowl, and wading birds including American white pelicans, avocets, and rare piping plovers. Surrounding grasslands and wetland edges make this a premier prairie birding site that draws enthusiasts from across North America every spring and fall.

🌲 Turtle Mountain Provincial Park – Forests, Lakes & Painted Turtles

About 90 km west of Winkler, Turtle Mountain Provincial Park rises above the prairie with 186 km² of rolling hardwood forest and over 200 lakes. Trail networks from 4 to 15 km wind through forest and along lakeshores, the park's namesake Western Painted Turtles sun themselves on logs in the warm shallows, and the adjacent International Peace Garden offers a tranquil cross-border natural sanctuary unlike anything else in Manitoba.
